A Stoic’s Take On Fitness: 6 Reasons It’s So Important

The Stoics knew that the body and mind were closely linked and that both needed to be looked after and trained. Seneca emphasized this by stating, “We treat our body rigorously so it is not disobedient to the mind.” A weak body will inhibit your mind, your work, and your overall well-being. It will drain unnecessary energy and put undue stress on you. However, a strong body will enhance your day-to-day life and improve your thinking.

Living simply means letting go of the endless chase for more stuff. As the Stoic philosopher Seneca said, “It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.” Think about how much time and energy you spend trying to get the next big thing. Rather focus on appreciating what you already have and find joy in it.

This is how it all started…

It was the beginning of summer, and I was up to my neck in exams, buried under a mountain of textbooks and endless notes. Life seemed to rush past me while I was left behind, filled with stress and fatigue. I felt like a prisoner of my school routine, caught in a relentless cycle of studying without purpose or joy. The weight of it all drained me. I began questioning why I was doing this and whether any of it truly mattered.

One morning, feeling particularly exhausted, I decided to take a quick break and opened YouTube for some mindless distraction. That’s when a video caught my eye: “9 Stoic Rules For A Better Life (From Marcus Aurelius)” by Ryan Holiday. The title intrigued me, so I clicked on it, not knowing it would change everything.

As I watched, I was struck by the calm and practical wisdom of Stoicism that Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor, had written nearly two thousand years ago. The advice was straightforward but profound and actionable. This spoke directly to the struggles I was facing. I watched the video again and again, every morning as I got ready for school.

Driven by curiosity about Stoicism, I went out and bought Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. I read it cover to cover, then read it again. The more I delved into his thoughts and Stoic philosophy as a whoole, the more I found a sense of peace and clarity I hadn’t felt in a long time.

This marked the beginning of my philosophical journey and my newfound love for books. I realized that within these pages were not just stories or teachings but wisdom and lessons that could guide me through life’s challenges.

And now, through this blog, I hope to share that same wisdom and passion with you, as I continue exploring the ideas that have inspired me and might just inspire you too.
